1961-1962: a sound technician in the Czechoslovak Radio, Prague, later a surveyor´s assistant
1962 - 1967: studies at Charles University´s Philosophical Faculty, English and Russian (1 month in 1962), English and Czech (1962-1965), English and Philosophy (1965-1967)
1967: graduation at the Faculty of Philosophy, Charles University, Prague (English and Philosophy). M.A. thesis title: Edgar Allan Poe´s The Fall of the House of Usher.
1967 - 1969: two years of compulsory military service
1969 - 1975: Asssistant Lecturer at the Dept. of Languages, Charles University´s Philosophical Faculty; the last of a series of time-limited contracts with me was suddenly terminated at the end of June, 1975, with the explanation that I was a „non-party-member with no perspective“. In my – personally biased, perhaps – interpretation of the course of events, I became the target of a Frantisek Sosna, one of the most ardent collaborationists at the Charles University´s Philosophical Faculty in the aftermath of the Soviet-led invasion.
1975 - 1977 teacher of English and workshop practice at a basic school with extended language instruction, Prague 4.
1977 - 1988: teacher of English, Language School Prague, 20 Národní St.
1982: PhDr. examinations, awarded the title of PhDr.
1988 - 1990: teacher and later the Deputy Director of newly founded Language School in Prague 4.
1990 - 1997: Assistant Professor, Dept. of English and American Studies, Charles University´s Philosophical Faculty.
1992 - 1993: Fulbright research grant, at Stanford University
1993 - 1997: head of the section of American Studies, Institute of English and American Studies, Charles University´s Philosophical Faculty
